May is National Mental Health Month!!

There are millions of people out there who struggle with mental health issues. Then you just have the everyday average person dealing with everyday stresses that come with life  and sometimes that alone can make a person feel like they are moving close to the edge. I know as a single mom sometimes I just wish I could just  disappear because my stress level seems to be overwhelmed. Anyway, here is one of my poems from my book Exhale wordz from the soul dealing with mental issues.  You can order a copy of my book from my website www.poetikempress.com the book is $8.00 for a limited time!!
Crazee
Shadows stand towering over me
Voices from within scramble
Mumbling things toward me
As trouble seems to surround me.

Fear is what I begin to feel
Not knowing whether the things that
I see are illusion or real.

Crazy is what they call me
Never realizing the trouble
That they actually cause me.

Damage that is already done from a pill that
They’ve given me to put a halt onto the illusions
That have seemed to cause so much confusion
When actually
They make me worse and no one wants to listen
To me chitter and chatter
As I say what I feel from verse to verse.

It is riddled around this universe and no one takes the time
To sit and rehearse the course of hurt
That took me to this place
Called darkness on the earth.

The tone that I have set
Makes it easier for others like me
An easy target for doctors to find and seek
Thinking that they know the answers
For every human
So to speak.

They’re human just the same
And their problems are even more to blame
Which is why they want to rid you of all
Your heartache and pain
So they won’t have to stand there
And feel the same as you and I.

Crazy is what they call me
But in reality
They are just as lost at times
Not letting anyone question they’re professional minds
When you and I know
There is only a matter of time
That they’ll be labeled the same and around in circles
As history repeats itself and craziness is just something
That we all develop within our minds.

No one is willing to lay down their pride
To sit and deal with the voices that makes us decide
The things that happen in our everyday lives
If we listen to ourselves
Then craziness would be just another
Bad day from hell.

Poems selected from my book in honor of Women’ s History Month

The essence of a woman

The essence of a woman is to nurture her soul

To cleanse her mind to become the independent

Woman that she can be.

To take the necessary steps that need be

To accomplish any and everything that comes her way

Let no barriers become unbreakable because there is

Always a way to make end to end meet.

Listen when I say

I know what it’s like to make it to a better day.

When I look in the mirror and see what I see

I am beautiful

Strong and independently unique.

So the next woman who seems to have her head down

Look up I tell you and see what I see

And tell yourself every single day simply

I love being me

Ever so faithfully and watch yourself rise

From out of that empty shell that used to be.

Interview with Talking with Tami!!

Talking with Tami-January 2009
 PinkSpotlightInterview:Author Alesica Smith!

TalkingWithTami.com:
Hello Alesica I am so proud of you! You have released your very own book Exhale Wordz from Tha’ Soul! Tell us what inspired you to write the book?

Alesica: Thank you! Well, I’ve been visioning my dream of becoming a published author for a long time. The inspiration to finally complete the task came when I kept having life threatning asthma attacks. With the last attack I actually stopped breathing and while I was recovering I started thinking about the things I’ve always wanted to do and the thought of never being able to complete them scared me.

TalkingWithTami.com: You write so well, take us back to the day you knew you had a gift of writing poetry?

Alesica: I think I was in the third or fourth grade when my whole class had to write their own story to be printed in a book. My story was called “The duck who loved rainbows”. I’m sure my mom has it around the house hidden somewhere just waiting to be found.
TalkingWithTami.com: Poetry is a very creative art form to me. How do you classify your style in writing it?

Alesica: I don’t know really… I’ve actually never thought about it but, I do try to be unique and realistic. I like to write about things that others can relate to.

TalkingWithTami.com: I also hear a book tour is in the making, you go girl! Tell us what states do you plan on going to?

Alesica: Well, after sharing this awesome moment here with my Hometown people of Cleveland I’m going to be going to L.A. in July so I’ll start there and from there it’s Florida and eventually I’ll be making a stop to visit with you. I can’t wait to see the great peach state and I hope you’re up to showing me around town!!

TalkingWithTami.com:You also were in a book called, How I met my sweetheart! I loved that book and read the whole thing on a plane ride to Los Angeles lol. Tell me how you got involved with that project?

Alesica: It was a contest that I never expected to be involved in I had submitted my story just for the fun of it! I was in such shock when the publisher accepted my story! How I met my sweetheart is a collection of short inspirational love stories written by myself and 17 other authors. It was an honor to work with such talented writers. The publisher of the sweetheart book is also the publisher for Exhale wordz from tha’ soul and I really appreciate the fact that she took the time to see me through to black and white.

Interview With Shades of Romance Magazine

Today I will be featured in an online magazine called Shades of Romance.  I am posting the interview with founder of  Shades of Romance online magazine LaShaunda Hoffman. To learn more about Shades of Romance Magazine please visit their site at: http://www.sormag.com/about.htm

What would you like readers to take away from your book?

Exhale wordz from tha’ soul is about all the elements that makes us human. It touches some of the subjects that we are most sensitive about. It’s about life, love, and family. It shares some of the trials that we may face and offers a little inspiration that so many people need to see a different view perhaps another way to get through their day. I am in hopes that the reader will receive the thought that life is what you make it, not what it makes of you. It’s okay to hold your breath as you go through certain life experiences as long as you learn to exhale all that you have been holding in. I hope to offer the thought that lovers and families will be closer after reading the thoughts that have come from one heart to another. Why did you choose to write this book? For so long I’ve held on to the thought that I was learning disabled and that I could never achieve such a great accomplishment. God has opened my eyes when I almost lost my life to asthma and I found myself renewed with a whole different outlook on life. I have been blessed with a dream that I never knew would finally come true.

What did you learn while writing this book?

I learned that producing a book takes time and patience. Good communication with your publisher is a must!

What was your favorite poem from the book?

My favorite poem from the book is called Breathe

What one thing about writing do you wish other non-writers would understand?

That writing isn’t always a finished product on the first try. Often times writer’s rewrite things more than once until satisfaction of their work is obtained.

What is the best lesson you have learned from another writer?

That organization is the key to the whole process of writing even after the book is finished.

What is the toughest test you’ve faced as a writer?

Having the money to complete the book on time

What is something readers would be surprised you do?

Animal Photography

What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?

Three things I wish I’d known before now are 1. That my health was going to give me problems 2. That I still would be unmarried at the age of 36 3.That my aunt Mary Norfleet wouldn’t be here to share some of my most accomplished moments.

How do you reach new readers?

Networking sites and Events

If you could have dinner with 3 authors to talk with about their writing (living or deceased) who would you invite and why?

The three authors I would pick are:

1. Maya Angelou she’s one of my idols and I’ve always wanted to meet her.

2. Barrack Obama because he’s an extraordinary man and I’ve read his first book and loved it.

3.Barbara Williams not only is she my publisher but, she is an inspiration to me and not having met her yet we have much to talk about!.

Can you give us one do and one don’t for those aspiring to be a poet?

One do is: Stay focused and One don’t is: Give up

How can readers get in contact with you? (mail, email, website)

Fat

Standing from across the store

You stare at me as if you haven’t any

Other place to look at anymore.

You make faces at me in disgust

You make me feel uncomfortable

In every place that I go and

My feelings feel unjust.

In my mind and heart

I’m not a bad person

Just overweight and oversized to be exact

I have needs

I have feelings in fact.

Others like you don’t know what it’s like

Being trapped

Mocked and shuffled to the side

As if we have no place here to coincide.

I’m tired of trying to defended my space

Here on earth

I used to put every bit of strength I had

To fight the snickering

Bickering about me being FAT

For what it was worth.

Realizing it’s a waste of my time and people

Who stare from across the room

Have something deeper than the looks of I

Disturbing their narrow minds.

I found that through this ordeal

That’s had me down

That actually

I am a beautiful individual and

This life has turned me around

To see all the things they don’t

And won’t see.

I am a beautiful individual

Mastered by the creator

Almighty God

He’s helped me in so many ways that

I’ve survived something

Sent from evil

Now I’m okay

I have the

Best care possible because

I am truly blessed.

Posting

I realize I’ve never posted anything here about me so this is going to be my first post of the day since it’s been a little while since my last posting.
Ms. Alesica Smith, known as the “Poetik Empress” to family and friends, resides in Wickliffe, Ohio, just outside of the Cleveland Metropolitan area.

Having discovered her love for writing at a young age, Alesica  penned her first story called “The Duck Who Loved Rainbows” for a class project.  Having put her own dreams on hold for years as she tended to family and other personal obligations, Alesica became frustrated that she was unable to share her gifts with the world.

Having overcome obstacles such as being hearing impaired, being labeled a slow learner during her early years as a child, and being told by a teacher that she could never learn another language because she could barely speak English, Alesica has compiled a book of poetry, Exhale: Words of tha Soul (Amani Publishing) that reflects the struggles, trials, and tribulations, that life often brings our way.

As a “30-Something” woman, Alesica states that, “I am thankful that God has given me another chance to share what could be my greatest moment in life, with others!”

Inspired by her three children and having almost lost her life to chronic asthma, Ms. Smith feels that all of her experiences in life have given her the strength to understand that life is too short and that writing helps her fulfill her goals and purpose in life, as well as the encouragement to pursue her other artistic talents that include drawing and painting.

Alesica is happy to be able to pursue her dreams and she hopes that you will find inspiration in her words as she shares with you her life’s journey!
